What is lipoedema?

www.gordianhealth.com.au Lipoedema - or lipedema, this spelling used in much of the world - is disproportionate accumulation of fat around the thighs, buttocks, and triceps areas. It was, until recently, thought of as a rare condition. Now, it is thought to affect around 11% of women. It is almost exclusively a female condition. From the above statues that are around 4,500 years old, it has been around for a long time. So why has it become so common, and why do we know so little about it? Lipoedema is is caused by hormone imbalance. It has a strong genetic component. In 2017,  lipoedema has been recognised as a medical condition. It now has a code in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The first guideline on its diagnosis and management has been published from the Netherlands.
